Recipient of LBCAF
2020 Grant Award
On October 10, 2020, the Lake Burton Civic Association Foundation announced Camp Evergreen as an LBCAF Grant Award Recipient in the amount of $5,000. The grant recognizes charitable organizations that are making an important community impact in Rabun County or the surrounding area.
Camp Evergreen, located near Moccasin Creek on Lake Burton, was started in 1999 by Bob and Jeanie Cook on the former Camp Cherokee for Girls property on Cherokee Cove. In 2009 Camp Evergreen leased the former Camp Winfield property and has since purchased and further developed both the property and programs. For over 20 years, the camp has been run by Katie Grady, the Cook’s daughter, and her husband Toby. It is located on 80 acres of wilderness close to Hemlock Falls. The non-denominational outdoor ministry connects over 500 campers each summer with God, nature, and each other through intentional programming and traditional camp activities. However, what sets Camp Evergreen apart is their passion for providing camp for all children, regardless of their economic situation. Each summer, the camp reserves three of their sessions for 200 economically disadvantaged children to experience a week of camp. These campers are invited through Atlanta and north Georgia based agencies and school districts.
Camp Director Katie Grady has seen the incredible impact of camp firsthand. "For these children, the Camp Evergreen experience is life-changing, sometimes in ways we never would have expected. For some children it is the opportunity to hear the crucial message that God loves them and has a unique plan for their lives. For others it is the opportunity to play and explore as a carefree child in a safe nature environment. For others it’s simply the opportunity to eat three square meals and a snack each day."
Students attend camp for free by obtaining Camperships from monies donated to Camp Evergreen for this purpose. The LBCAF Grant Award to Camp Evergreen is designated for Rabun County and Habersham County children Camperships.
