Memories of Summer to Warm Your Winter Days!

Greetings to all and welcome to our new website!  Another enjoyable summer has passed, filled with water activities, family and friends, and LBCA functions.  My term as president started on June 9th at the Annual Membership Meeting attended by approximately 250 LBCA members, family, and their guests.  New eager board members Elizabeth Gill, Lin Goen, Fletch Homer, and Tom Madison were elected to three year terms to fill the vacancies for the expiring terms of John Dearing, Mike Dobbs, and Eston Melton.  Thank you to the departing board members for their outstanding service to the Lake Burton community.  Chip Groome was elected as vice president.

On June 23rd our biennial LBCA Tour of Homes was held under the able leadership of Chairwoman Leigh Welch and was a record-setting success. The Tour of Homes raised over $15,000 for the benefit of our volunteer fire departments.  One thing that often goes unnoticed is the complexity of the logistics of staging this event – finding home owners willing to show their homes, recruiting and scheduling docents, recruiting and scheduling boats and drivers, and a host of other details and tasks.  I am amazed and impressed how all of this came together.  Many thanks to all the volunteers for their efforts to make this event so enjoyable.  For complete coverage see the Tour of Homes article.

The 27th Annual LBCA Golf Tournament was held on July 27th at Waterfall Club.  This event was also an outstanding success and raised nearly $25,000 for our volunteer fire departments.  Kudos and thankyous to golf committee members Chip Groome, Mark Swiecichowski, and Martha Ramsey and to all of the volunteers for their efforts that made this another record setting year.  For complete coverage on the tournament, see my article about the winners and volunteers.

The Lake Burton Cleanup Day was held on August 10th.  A huge thankyou to all the dedicated volunteers that came out to clean up our shoreline.  Also, our appreciation is extended to Georgia Power Company for their assistance in the cleanup and to Waterfall Club for inviting the volunteers to lunch.  Your help is always needed for this event.  Mark your calendars for next year’s Lake Burton Cleanup Day on May 31, 2019.

Your board has also been busy in other activities that we feel are particularly important.  Our website committee, under the leadership of Tom Madison, has worked hard to bring the new LBCA website to fruition.  It has more capability, performs at a vastly improved speed, will contain more current content, and be more user friendly than the former website.

We have established a brokerage account with Fidelity Investments that can accept donations of appreciated stock to our charities and can allow the donors to enjoy a tax benefit.  Donors will be able to earmark their donations to specific Rabun County charities, our volunteer fire departments and to our Lake Burton Scholarship Foundation which serves deserving students in Rabun County.  If you wish to donate appreciated stock instead of cash, please contact me at 404-892-4679 or by email at

Speaking of the Lake Burton Scholarship Foundation, board member Sam King is leading our efforts to energize our campaign to raise money for the foundation.  He will be contacting all of us soon so please contribute what you can to this worthy cause.  In the meantime you may contact Sam at 706-421-0009 or at

The Lake Burton Centennial Committee is gearing up for our centennial celebration in 2020.  Mike Maffett has been hard at work writing the “History of Lake Burton” and is nearly finished.  It will be published as a book for the celebration.  If you are interested in being a part of the celebration, please contact the committee chair, Chip Groome, at 404-791-3443 or at

Lastly, Lake Burton Park has become a wonderful destination for our young children at the lake.  Please visit it when you can.  The Lake Burton Park committee raised $3,021 from the sale of commemorative bricks this year and will be offering them for sale again next year.  Please contact Lin Goen at or 770-289- 9358 if you would like to order your personalized brick.  I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and look forward to the startup of lake activities in the spring.
