A Letter From Our President

The countdown has begun and the year 2020 will mark a milestone for members of the Lake Burton Community.  It is the 100th anniversary of the creation of this wonderful place we all love.  The Lake Burton Civic Association board has been putting together a schedule of events and activities to “make it a summer to remember” by celebrating our heritage, building new traditions, and increasingly giving back to the community.  All we need is your participation and generosity to make it all happen.

Here’s what we have in store for next summer, in addition to the annual 4th of July Fun Run and Fireworks Show:

  • In May, the much-anticipated release of Mike Maffett’s historical book, Our Southern Eden, a Centennial History of Lake Burton and the Upper Tallulah Basin.  A must have for every Lake Burton home.
  • Memorial Day Weekend, May 24th, initiates a Classic Wooden Boat Parade & Show featuring Lake Burton’s most beautiful collection of these timeless masterpieces.  A new tradition in the making.  All wooden boat owners are invited to participate.
  • The LBCA Tour of Homes, a biennial event, will be held Saturday, June 27th.  The tour will showcase five beautiful and inspiring homes with the pontoon boats leaving LaPrade’s Marina for the first time.  A fun way to spend a day on the lake with your neighbors.
  • The 29th Annual LBCA Golf Tournament, July 31st, once again to be held at the beautiful and challenging Waterfall Club.  A golfer’s favorite.
  • Lake Burton’s 100th birthday celebration, August 22nd, the Centennial Burton Bash will be a night not to be missed of family fun at Camp High Harbour’s magnificent new dining hall, overlooking the lake.  The evening will feature an original LaPrade’s-style fried chicken dinner, music and a silent art auction.  A special evening with 450 of your favorite friends, not to be missed.
  • Labor Day Weekend Fireworks Show, September 5th, staged on the north end of the lake offering a different perspective against the backdrop of Waterfall Club and the North Carolina mountains.  A totally different experience.
  • Historical Legacies to be unveiled during the summer include two restoration projects of iconic Lake Burton fixtures:  the original 1948 BIG RED Fire Engine and a relocated, restored and refurbished LaPrade’s Vacation Cabin.  Preserving history for future generations.

As you can see, we have big dreams and plans for the summer of 2020 and the Centennial Celebration, but we cannot do these things without the help and generosity of our members.  We are asking each of you to consider how you would like to be a part of these events.  In the following weeks and months, you will be receiving correspondence for our LBCA endorsed programs.  We will need volunteers and funding to make these programs successful.  Let’s use this opportunity to demonstrate that the citizens of Lake Burton are a caring and generous group, and vital to the volunteer fire departments, deserving students and other charities serving our area.  If successful in our efforts, we will also grow the capital resources of LBCA for potential future needs.

If you would like to donate before year end, consider becoming a Centennial Member Sponsor and receive some centennial perks which will reserve your spot in some of our exciting venues, especially the new Burton Bash.  You can also make donations to the Lake Burton Scholarship Fund and Legacy Projects.  These are all tax deductible this year.  Why not pre-order Mike Maffet’s book as a special holiday gift?  The LBCA website can process all of this for you, but a card can be downloaded and printed if you would like to mail a check to us.

We sincerely appreciate your consideration,

Ron Majors
